Latest internet scam - Tech support

By

I just got this call

I just wanted to pass on awareness. I just got a call on our new home phone (strange as it would be listed anywhere yet) from someone claiming to be from a company called 24x7 tech support. They said that I had an infection in my computer and there was a problem with malware. They said that my computer has sent them error messages and they were an affiliate of Microsoft and widows error messages get sent to them in my area. They said that I could disconnect from the internet if I was worried about security (as I was really not convinced this was right and was questioning them quite strongly). They asked me to turn on my computer and they would guide me to the errors. I said no and hung up but they called me back saying that left untreated my computer would crash in a few days and that virus scans don’t pick up this particular problem, so I immediately got online and googled the company and scam, and said to the rude Indian guy that I just looked up his company and it is a scam and hung up. He didn’t call back.

According to an article written in The Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jul/18/phone-scam-india-call-centres It appears that they are not going to implant any viruses on your computer but are after a payment for their service and your bank details.

Just thought I would let you know in case get a call and so you can let others know this is going around.
